Conference Theme

The 2020 conference theme, Connecting the Global Open Education Community, signifies even more to our community during this unprecedented time.

In November 2019, 193 UNESCO Member States unanimously adopted the Recommendation on Open Educational Resources (OER) during the 40th General UNESCO Conference in Paris, France.

The Recommendation has become the highest international policy in Open Education. It proposes a set of recommendations to help advance open education in all countries/regions around the world.

The Recommendation has five action areas:

  1. Building capacity of stakeholders to create access, use, adapt and redistribute OER;
  2. Developing supportive policy;
  3. Encouraging inclusive and equitable quality OER;
  4. Nurturing the creation of sustainability models for OER; and
  5. Facilitating international cooperation.

While international cooperation is important in its own right, it is also seen as a main mechanism to help address all of the other areas of action in the Recommendation. The theme and structure of OEGs 2020 conference intentionally aims to support the UNESCO OER Recommendation.
