Integration of Open Practices

[Action Lab] The ‘MIND’ – a Journey along the Frontiers of Science & an Entry into the World of Open

Fred Mulder

emeritus Dutch UNESCO Chair in OER

Join us to learn more about this exciting initiative and to brainstorm on new approaches to realize open learning experiences at a global scale in themes that matter.

‘The Mind of the Universe’ (shortly ‘The MIND’) is a unique television and internet-based initiative with a threefold purpose, namely to:

  • provide access for a vast range of people, wherever they live and whatever their background is and age, to what science and technology is going to bring in terms of future perspectives, solutions for significant problems, and dilemmas to be considered
  • offer a learning experience in the ‘World of Open’, building on the television series ‘ The Mind of the Universe’, reaching out to a large worldwide audience, and generating a strong and broad global awareness of the full benefits of the ‘World of Open’ for (potential) learners and societies
  • engage a worldwide community of scholars, researchers and teachers, creative TV, video, and graphic experts, educational specialists, and a large ‘crowd’ to become infused, in order for all to contribute on their wish and in their capacity to the initiative.

In the first part of the Action Lab we will discuss with you the following questions:

Why and how did ‘The MIND’ start?, What are its constituent pillars?, How could its global scope be accomplished, for example through its global knowledge and network partners (OEC, UNESCO, Creative Commons, …)?, What is unique about it?, and What has been completed already and what is its further agenda for 2016 and beyond?

In the Action Lab’s (larger) second part we will explore the anticipated approach to make ‘The MIND’ sustainable by engaging a worldwide community of primarily volunteers. This community is expected to contribute to an expansion of ‘The MIND’ beyond its initial TV content into a substantial digital content base around it, and to the development of a wide variety of learning experiences through all content available. We would very much appreciate to learn your thoughts, suggestions or other contributions (institutionally or personally) for an effective implementation of such a challenging Wikipedia-like approach to ‘The MIND’.
