Opportunity in Education is a global digital education project that will provide easy access and equal opportunity for anyone. We do this by the means of enhancing existing open source based e-Learning structures and establishing structures where they are missing. Our aim is to cross link and connect them around the world in order to create a powerful global e-learning environment that includes a central multilingual content hub that every user is invited to contribute to.
How is “Opportunity in Education” designed and how does it work?
One of the key benefits and the corner stones of the “Opportunity in Education” learning environments are open source learning management systems such as Moodle, Ilias, Chamilo, OpenOlat etc. We enhance e.i. moodle with a open source Drupal software based layer to add more functionality and to provide a modern and intuitive user interface for the front and back end. The design is such, that the core moodle installation will not be changed, allowing the easy and independent changes and updates of the moodle software. The chosen development design allows for any existing Moodle installation (including all of its user profiles and learning content) to immediately adopt the “Opportunity in Education” concept.
As “Opportunity in Education” is primarily based and built up on existing and well established Open Source learning management systems it is open to the world wide community of open source developers, thus connection tens of thousands enthusiastic and brilliant e-Learning minds that are all able to contribute to the creation of equal opportunity learning environments.
One of the key benefits of “Opportunity in Education” is to connect and cross link Open Source learning management systems such as Moodle, Ilias, Chamilo, OpenOlat etc. via Plugins and APIs such as the Experience API as well as via custom layers via a central OE Content Hub with each other and with third party software tools and applications that open source learning management systems would not automatically connect with or link to.
The “Opportunity in Education” project is designed to provide access for anyone to a highly effective, intuitive, fun to use and affordable learning environment that can be easily implemented anywhere in the world as a local, regional or cross linked e-Learning solution in order to form digital learning communities and ultimately a global e-Learning network.
Open Source software is generally very affordable and it can be used anywhere in the world. Open Source software is ideal for customization and one can expanded upon the software core easily – to teach the software new tricks so to speak.
At the heart of “Opportunity in Education” would beat a Open Education Content Hub any connected learning environment would be able to access (draw from or post to).
