In today’s information society electronic content is available on the internet at an unprecedented level, with volume estimated as having a growth rate of 700% between 2010 and 2015 (IDC 2011). This abundance does however pose challenges for the visibility of content from certain geographical regions and in many cases curatorial efforts to add appropriate metadata need to be complemented by efforts to promote resources and drive traffic to repository sites. The OpenUCT Initiative conducted a Twitter experiment to gauge whether profiling resources on social media might have the effect of increasing repository traffic. Findings indicate a significant spike in user visits for the profiled resources. This poster draws attention to the problem of resource visibility in the global South and outlines the methodology and findings of this simple yet compelling experiment that demonstrates the power of social media in boosting the visibility of online scholarly content.
